Gwalior is famous city and tourist destination in Madhya Pradesh.
This is the ancient capital of the Scindias is in the far north of Madhya Pradesh, a suitable base from which to begin the Bundelkhand circuit. Gwalior is in essence a small town with its necessary share of dust and chaos, but it bears the stamp of a place that has seen much magnificence and knows it. Once the capital of maharajas and Mughl emperors, it is now the seat of the Scindia royal family. It is majestic 10th-century fort, which dominates the whole region from atop a huge bluff.
Unless you happen to be in Gwalior during a special event, there isn’t much to do once you’ve seen the sights, other than wander around the streets and by lanes to absorb the flavour of the city. Parts of it, especially the Old City, make for a very interesting gander on foot. Gwalior is a very accessible getaway, and perfect for a slightly off-beat tow r three day break.
Things to see and do
Gwalior Fort is two miles long and 35 ft high on a sandstone bluff. The path leading up from the entrance is carved with defaced Jain temples.
Tomb of Ghaus Mohammed Tis exquisite monument, encased in gauzy stone screenwork, is at its most fetching in the late afternoon and at night, when it is lit up. Set in a lovely garden and backed by acemetery of the saint's devotees, the tomb is also the site of the annual Tansen Music Festival in Nov-Dec.
Sun Temple This is the Birla' sandstone version of the Sun Temple at Konark. It's in a pretty enough garden and covered with carvings, but not the most exciting destination for the godless visitor.
